BfR confirms: PTFE-coated cookware is safe for consumers – when used correctly
In June 2025, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) updated its assessment of PTFE-coated cookware. The core message remains unchanged:
When used correctly, there are no health concerns for consumers.
What’s new is the context: This updated evaluation was published against the backdrop of the ongoing debate around a potential EU-wide ban on PFAS substances. The BfR emphasizes a toxicological differentiation within the PFAS group: While PTFE is chemically classified as a PFAS, its stable, polymeric structure makes it non-bioavailable – and thus toxicologically distinct from other, smaller PFAS compounds.
For manufacturers, retailers, and brands, this renewed BfR statement offers:
- Planning reliability for continued use of PTFE-based products
- Clarity in customer and partner communication
- A competitive edge through verifiable product safety information
